چکیده
Aims. We investigate the frequency-dependent radio properties of the jet of the luminous high-redshift (z = 3.2) radio quasar PKS 1402+044 (J1405+0415) by means of radio interferometric observations. Methods. The observational data were obtained with the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) at 1.6 and 5 GHz, supplemented by other multi-frequency observations with the The observations span a period of 7 years. Results. We find that the luminous high-redshift quasar PKS 1402+044 has a pronounced " core-jet " morphology from the parsec to the kilo-parsec scales. The jet shows a steeper spectral index and lower brightness temperature with increasing distance from the jet core. The variation of brightness temperature agrees well with the shock-in-jet model. Assuming that the jet is collimated by the ambient magnetic field, we estimate the mass of the central object as ∼ 10 9 M ⊙. The upper limit of the jet proper motion of PKS 1402+044 is 0.03 mas yr −1 (∼ 3c) in the east-west direction.

Parsec-scale properties of GHz-Peaked Spectrum sources from 2.3 and 8.6 GHz VLBI surveys
We investigate the sample of 213 GPS sources selected from simultaneous multi-frequency 1– 22 GHz observations obtained with RATAN–600 radio telescope. We use publicly available data to characterize parsec-scale structure of the selected sources. Among them we found 121 core dominated sources, 76 Compact Symmetric Object (CSO) candidates (24 of them are highly probable), 16 sources have complex...
متن کاملParsec-scale structures of radio galaxies in the 2-Jy sample
In this paper we present the results of VLBI observations of six radio galaxies belonging to the 2-Jy sample. The selected objects are 3C17, PKS 0620−52, PKS 0625−35, PKS 1318−43, PKS 1333−33 and 3C317. The first is a high power radio galaxy and the remainder are all low power objects. Our observations were carried out with a set of different arrays and frequencies, and cover a range of resolut...
متن کاملDirect Distance Measurements to Superluminal Radio Sources
We present a new technique for directly measuring the distances to superluminal radio sources. By comparing the observed proper motions of components in a parsec scale radio jet to their measured Doppler factors, we can deduce the distance to the radio source independent of the standard rungs in the cosmological distance ladder. This technique requires that the jet angle to the line of sight an...
متن کاملRadio Luminosity Function, Importance of Jet Power, and Radio Properties of Nearby Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei
We present the completed results of a high resolution radio imaging survey of all (∼200) low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) in the Palomar Spectroscopic Sample of all (∼470) nearby bright northern galaxies. The high incidence of pc-scale radio nuclei, with implied brightness temperatures >∼ 107 K, and sub-parsec jets argue for accreting black holes in > ∼50% of all LLAGNs; there is ...
متن کاملScintillation-induced Variability in Radio Absorption Spectra against Extragalactic Sources
Abstract. Spectral features absorbed against some radio quasars exhibit ∼ 50mJy variations, with the lines varying both relative to the continuum and, when several lines are present, even relative to one another. We point out that such variability can be expected as a consequence of refractive scintillation caused by the interstellar medium of our Galaxy. Scintillation can cause independent var...
